Bruce Power, supplier partners donate $100,000 to Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario
Bruce Power and its supplier partners have donated $100,000 to the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) to support families impacted by childhood cancer.
Diagnoses of pediatric childhood cancer continue to rise globally every year. Bruce Power and its supplier partners proudly support POGO in its mission to build the most robust and comprehensive system of cancer care available in Ontario and beyond.
“The goal for Bruce Power and its supplier partners is to support POGO in doing what it does best – caring for those who are impacted by cancer at every stage of need,” said Pat Dalzell, vice-president of corporate affairs and market development. “Bruce Power plays a critical role as a global producer of the cancer-fighting medical isotopes Cobalt-60 and Lutetium-177. What happens on the human level at every other stage of the treatment and recovery continuum is what matters most. We are proud to contribute to the amazing work POGO does with families impacted by childhood cancer.”
Reactors at the Bruce Nuclear site have been producing cancer-fighting medical isotope for decades. Cobalt-60 helps sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s medical devices, as well as treat brain tumours and breast cancer. In 2022, Bruce Power expanded its isotope production capability with the installation of an innovative Isotope Production System (IPS), which produces Lutetium-177. This isotope is used to treat neuroendocrine tumours and prostate cancer.
A second IPS was added to Bruce Power’s Unit 7 in 2024, while a new system will be installed in Unit 6 in 2027. This increase in supply redundancy and capacity will ensure that Bruce Power’s isotope program can nimbly support innovations in the isotope industry as research continues to identify new opportunities and react to current demands.
“Bruce Power and its supplier partners are steadfast partners in POGO’s mission, as the leader of Ontario’s childhood cancer care system, to support children, youth, survivors, and families throughout their cancer journey,” said Lauren Ettin, chief executive officer. “Their ongoing generosity helps us strengthen vital programs across Ontario, ensuring that families not only receive the best medical care, but also the emotional, educational, and financial supports they need.”

isotope merchandise website celebrates the cancer-fighting medical isotopes produced in its reactors, with $2 from each sale being shared between POGO and the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
