Huron Shores Hospice hosting session on cultural humility
Huron Shores Hospice is hosting an insightful workshop, graciously sponsored by Ontario Power Generation, designed to empower the community and enhance everyone’s understanding of cultural humility.

Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7, from 1-3 p.m., at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, the session will explore how cultural humility enhances person-centred approaches in care and service delivery. With Canada’s rich diversity, traditional models of cultural competence and sensitivity are no longer sufficient. This workshop will highlight the importance of recognizing personal culture and applying self-reflection in practice.

Objectives:

  • Understand what cultural humility is and how it differs from cultural sensitivity/competence.
  • Learn how to apply a culturally-humble approach across sectors of service.
  • Explore the importance of personal culture when supporting individuals.
  • Examine how cultural humility forms the basis for anti-racism, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction.

The facilitator for this workshop is Rami Shami who has more than 30 years of experience in hospice and palliative care, serving in roles ranging from volunteer to educator and consultant. His work focuses on fostering inclusive, equitable, and person-centred approaches to care, with expertise in cultural humility and trauma-informed care. Passionate about dignity and compassion, he supports individuals, families, and caregivers in navigating life-limiting illness, grief, and loss.
