​Kincardine Winter Coat Drive warms the heart of those in need

The fourth annual Kincardine Winter Coat Drive saw an amazing amount of coats, hats, mitts, gloves, scarves, wraps, boots, shoes, sweaters and hoodies donated to help those in need.

The items were collected in September and October, at Little Beginnings Daycare and West Shore Clothing in downtown Kincardine, and then distributed Thursday evening and Friday, at Knox Presbyterian Church, Kincardine.

“If anyone doubts that our community is wonderfully generous and caring, you should have been at the church Thursday night,” said organizer Wendy Cox. “We had an incredible number of winter coats and accessories, as well as children’s coats and snow pants. And our volunteers were more than happy to see the clothing marching out the door.”

The volunteers assisted people in finding items they needed. “Judging from their appreciative words and their beaming smiles, we had more than a little success in that regard,” said Cox.

At the end of the session, all the children’s apparel was bagged to go to the Clothes Hamper in downtown Kincardine. Eighteen warm and colourful coats of varying sizes, and a few pairs of boots remained at Knox Church in case of need, and more are stored where they can replenish that stock as it dwindles. Sweaters, hoodies and coats were to be delivered to the United Way of Bruce Grey to be shared with the wider community.

Cox said there are a good assortment of hats, mitts/gloves, scarves/wraps remaining. The church will keep some, but it isn’t open all day every day. “It would be wonderful if some local businesses and/or
organizations, such as the library or the Legion, for example, that do function daily would agree to hold a stock of accessories which could be freely given out, whenever needed.”
