Kincardine Hospital redevelopment enters critical next phase for MRI approvals
The redevelopment of the Kincardine Hospital has taken another critical step forward, with the Ontario Ministry of Health granting approval to bring the project into detailed planning – the final stage before construction.

As the project moves forward, the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation must secure the final $6-million needed to fund the community share of $18-million. This milestone highlights the importance of community support to expand and modernize the Kincardine Hospital.

That’s the word from the hospital foundation in a press release issued Monday.

“Seeing ministry approvals secured is incredibly exciting for our community,” says foundation president Becky Fair. “We are now entering the final stretch of our campaign. The community has already shown tremendous generosity, and together, we can raise the remaining $6-million to bring this project to life.”

The project includes a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite which will significantly enhance patient care in the region, reducing the need for residents to travel outside the community for essential imaging and ensuring timely diagnoses close to home. MRI technology represents one of the most substantial investments in the redevelopment project, with costs forming a significant portion of the local share.

The expanded emergency department, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory spaces will be nearly three times larger than current facilities, designed to meet the needs of patients today and for generations to come.

The foundation has been working in partnership with the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, which operates hospitals in Kincardine, Walkerton, Chesley and Durham, since the project’s inception. Through the Building Health Care for Generations campaign, launched in January, 2022, nearly $12-million has been raised. The foundation now turns its focus to raising the remaining $6-million in 2026, with a particular emphasis on funding the MRI suite.

“Momentum is building, and we know the community is ready to rally,” says Graham Mahood, co-chairperson of the Capital Campaign Committee. “Every contribution brings us closer to shovels in the ground and to ensuring that future generations have access to modern, innovative health care right here in Kincardine.”

The foundation invites community members, businesses, and partners to join in this historic effort. Together, we can ensure that the Kincardine Hospital stands ready to deliver exceptional care in modern, accessible, and innovative facilities.

The Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation was established in 1995 as a non-profit charitable organization. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors that is committed to representing the people of Kincardine and the surrounding communities. The sole purpose of the foundation is to raise funds for the benefit of our local hospital.

The foundation has gathered a team of volunteers, led by co-chairpersons Kathryn Freimanis and Graham Mahood. These volunteers are the foundation’s ambassadors, and include current and retired health-care workers, businesspeople, and interested community members. These ambassadors are reaching out to families, community groups and businesses to achieve the $18-million goal of the Building Health Care for Generations campaign.
