Huron County OPP part of "Stay Focused" traffic initiative
(HURON COUNTY, ON) - Huron County OPP officers will be keeping a watchful eye for distracted drivers during the "Stay Focused" traffic campaign which runs March 27 to April 3.

Fatal collisions caused by inattentive driving remain a serious issue in West Region. In 2024, the OPP investigated 114 fatal collisions, resulting in 125 deaths; 45 of those deaths were linked to inattentive driving. In 2025, inattentive driving caused 22 deaths, and year-to-date for 2026, two fatalities have already occurred.

To address this continued risk, the West Region OPP will implement enhanced focused patrols targeting distracted drivers through the "Stay Focused" traffic campaign. This initiative strengthens ongoing efforts to reduce fatalities by increasing enforcement on behaviours, such as texting, phone use, and other driver distractions.

Distracted-driving laws include using a handheld device for communication or entertainment, driving with a display screen visible, and careless driving. The penalties for these offences vary from monetary fines and vehicle impounds to driver's licence suspensions, demerit points, and possible jail time.

Expect to see an increase in enforcement throughout Huron County, and all West Region during this enforcement campaign.

All drivers have a responsibility to direct their entire attention to driving safely. If you see any dangerous or concerning driving behaviour, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or 911 in an emergency.
