SVCA upgrades water safety statement to flood watch due to heavy rainfall
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has upgraded its water safety statement to a flood watch, due to heavy rainfall earlier this week and additional rain in the forecast.

Tuesday, March 31, thunderstorms brought 20-75 millimetres (mm) of rain to the watershed. As a result, water levels have increased substantially in local rivers and streams. While small watercourses started to decline Wednesday, April 1, larger rivers remain high.

Forecasts indicate an additional 30-40 mm of rain is possible, with precipitation expected April 2 and continuing into Saturday, April 4. With the ground already saturated, this rainfall will lead to increased run-off and a rapid rise in local rivers and streams.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated at this time, localized flooding in low-lying areas and near watercourses, is possible over the coming days. Pooling of water in agricultural fields, low-lying areas, and areas with poor drainage, is expected. More extensive flooding is possible should the watershed receive more rain than what is currently forecast.

Municipal staff is advised to monitor drainage systems and low-lying infrastructure. Residents are reminded to exercise caution near all watercourses as stream banks may be slippery and unstable, and the water is very cold and fast-moving.

SVCA staff will be closely monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in effect until Tuesday, April 7 at 12 p.m., unless updated otherwise.
