The Kincardine Family Health Organization has announced that both positions in Kincardine’s new Family Medicine Physician Residency Program have been successfully matched during the first round of the Canadian Resident Matching Service.

Beginning in July, Dr. Kelechukwu Oranu (above, left) and Dr. Ijeje Sule (above, right) will join Kincardine as the first resident physicians in the community’s newly-established residency training program through Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Matching both residency positions in the first round is considered a significant achievement and reflects the growing interest in rural medical training opportunities and the strength of Kincardine’s health-care community.

This is an exciting milestone for Kincardine and for our residency program,” said Dr. Jason Murray, residency program site director. “Successfully matching both positions in the first round speaks to the quality of training opportunities available here and the dedication of our local physicians, health-care teams, and community partners. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Kelechukwu Oranu and Dr. Ijeje Sule to Kincardine.”

Oranu brings more than five years of experience in both clinical care and health-care administration, along with a strong interest in rural medicine and under-served communities.

Sule practised medicine for more than eight years in Nigeria and has worked in both rural cardiology and urban general surgery settings since moving to Canada in 2022.

Throughout their two-year residency placement, both physicians will receive hands-on training in primary care, hospital inpatient care, and emergency medicine, while living and learning within the Kincardine community.

Physician recruitment and retention continues to be one of the most important priorities for rural communities,” said mayor Kenneth Craig. “Successfully filling both residency positions is a tremendous accomplishment and demonstrates the strength of collaboration among the Kincardine Family Health Organization, Western University, and the Municipality of Kincardine. We are excited to welcome these new physicians to our community.”

The residency program is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen health-care services in Kincardine by training and supporting future family physicians in a rural setting.
