Hildegarde Sausik of Orangeville has returned to the Victoria Park Gallery in downtown Kincardine, with a marvellous exhibit of her work, as the featured artist for the month of June.
The gallery's guest artist two years ago, Sausik has spent the past two years concentrating on meditative drawing and painting, and more saturated colour with her glorious botanical watercolours.
"You'll see some of the jazz influence in my work," she says. "I listen to classical music when I'm doing my botanicals, but I've worked some jazzy saxophone and piano keys into the 'Jazz Beat 1' and 'Jazz Beat 2'. And I love colour so the paintings are very saturated with colour and outlined in ink."
She also has some celestial pieces and constellations.
"I always wanted to do something in black," she says. "This new textile work is white embroidery on black linen and framed in the embroidery hoop."
Originally from Toronto, Sausik was a fashion designer for many years and had her own business, selling clothing all across Canada and the United States.
She retired in 2000 and her textile art is a continuation of her wearable art clothing collection.
Sausik has been friends with Marguerite Van Erp of Kincardine for 25 years, from when they lived in The Beaches in Toronto.
“I came to Kincardine to visit her and that’s when I found out about the Victoria Park Gallery,” says Sausik. “I was asked to be the guest artist two years ago and enjoyed it so much, I'm back."
She also has work at the Collingwood Art Gallery and at her home studio in Orangeville.
Her studio companion is her dog, “Barclay,” who critiques her work!
