Bulldogs blast Patriots in opening game of semi-finals; honour Ron "Ticker" Boulton

The Kincardine Nicol Insurance Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders, Monday afternoon, as they blasted the Mount Forest Patriots, 5-1, in the opening game of their Western Junior "C" best-of-seven, semi-final series, at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

It was a win-win for the 'Dogs and their fans, as they also honoured Ron "Ticker" Boulton during Ticker Appreciation Day.

Boulton has held a variety of positions within the community and was a long-time member of the Bulldogs hockey club executive, before taking a sabbatical this year. He was secretary of the Bulldogs, president of the Kincardine Minor Hockey Association, and was recreation director and facilities manager at the Davidson Centre.

Just prior to the game against Mount Forest, Boulton was welcomed to centre ice, by piper Keith Davidson, drummer Floyd Johnson, flag-bearers Craig Whitfield and Boulton's granddaughter, Abby, as well as flower bearer Marianne White.

The Bulldogs presented Ticker with a couple of items in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the team. Warren Beisel presented him with a jersey specially made for the occasion from minor hockey, and a jersey from the Bulldogs. Shawn Moore presented Ticker with a Bulldogs flag signed by all of this season's players.

Ticker then dropped the puck for the ceremonial face-off between Bulldogs captain Gerrit Satosek and Mount Forest captain Shawn Lantz.

As for the hockey game, the Bulldogs got the win with great play by Tyler Fregona, who had one goal and two assists. Fregona scored 6:54 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kincardine. Logan Freiburger picked up the assist.

Kincardine's Jacob Hutchings was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 28 saves and let only one puck past him. Hutchings managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.2 prior to the game.

The Bulldogs' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Mount Forest powerplays. Kincardine forced Mount Forest goalie Mathieu Oullette to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

Kincardine also got points from Eric Langridge, who had one goal and one assist; and a goal from Patrick Wiejak. Assists came from Shane Vollmer with one, and Matthew Mah with four.
