For years, the concern for organizers of area winter carnivals, was whether there would be enough snow.
However, this year, there was just too much snow, high wind and frigid temperatures, causing blowing and drifting snow and closing all the highways around Ripley on the weekend of the Ripley Winter Carnival.
Despite the weather, the event carried on, with the costume skate Friday night; and the pancake breakfast, mule-drawn sleigh rides, hockey skills competition and ice-painting Saturday.
The only thing cancelled were the hockey games that were to run through the day Saturday. However, organizers invited everyone to enjoy public skating at one end of the arena ice surface, and shinny hockey at the other end.
About 150 brave souls made it to the breakfast at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre, said community services director Mike Fair. Another 30 courageous and bundled-up souls enjoyed the sleigh rides.
In the afternoon, about 20 young people took part in the hockey skills competition, while about 40 children enjoyed the ice-painting afterwards.
