Members of the Huron Bruce Nature Club enjoyed the artistic photography of Rob Wray (above) at the June 23 meeting, in Point Clark.
A member of both the Owen Sound Field Naturalist Club and the Bruce Birding Club, Wray has come to photography and birding only in the past five years, and is largely self-taught. His love of the natural world, poetry, music, and the harbours of Georgian Bay all came together in a visually-stunning presentation to club members at the Annual General Meeting.
Wray began his slide show with images of the earth from outer space, taken by astronauts. Quoting poets, such as Wordsworth and E. E. Cummings, he wove a narrative of how people, birds, animals, reptiles and insects live through the cycle of changing seasons, light, and weather. The slide show showcased an exceptional collection of photographs, rich with natural detail. Wray presented an impressive range of subjects — birds in motion, quiet moments with mammals, tiny insects, glowing sunsets, and sweeping landscape vistas — weaving them together with warm, engaging narration.
Organized across the 12 months of the year, the presentation revealed how the character of light shifts with the seasons, from the cool clarity of winter mornings to the golden warmth of late-summer evenings. This seasonal structure not only highlighted the diversity of his work but also deepened the club's appreciation for the patience and awareness required to capture nature at its most compelling.
Wray’s photography can be found on the Owen Sound Field Naturalists Facebook page. His informative posts on Feathered Fridays, are exceptionally popular.
