Wheat Kings host Under-14 AAA baseball tournament at Connaught Park in Kincardine

The West Coast Wheat Kings hosted the Under-14 (U14) AAA baseball tournament, last weekend (June 19-21), at Connaught Park, Kincardine.

The team consists of players from Grey and Bruce counties, including Kincardine, Walkerton, Mount Forest, West Grey, Drayton, Arthur, Milverton, Meaford and Harriston.

The Wheat Kings opened the tournament with a loss to the Aurora King Jays, 7-4, Friday.

Chase Jones was starting pitcher for the Wheat Kings and surrendered one hit and three runs over two innings, striking out five and walking one.

Wyatt Moyer, Oliver Morwood, Jones, Jack Tiffin, and Ryan Hawkins each collected one hit for the Wheat Kings, and Jones and Hawkins each drove in one run.

Saturday, the Wheat Kings took on the Etobicoke Rangers and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Wheat Kings captured the lead, 3-1, in the top of the sixth after Briley Fraser doubled down the left field line, and Ryan Hawkins laid down a sacrifice bunt, each scoring one run. But the Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Jack Tiffin was the starting pitcher for the Wheat Kings, and surrendered six hits and three runs through just over five innings, striking out one and walking three.

Emmitt McQuillin, Oliver Morwood, and Fraser each collected two hits for the Wheat Kings, and Jones, Fraser, and Hawkins each drove in one run. The Wheat Kings turned one double play in the game.

The Wheat Kings took on the Sarnia Brigade in their next game, Saturday night, and were edged out by a close 6-5 score.

Morwood was the starting pitcher and surrendered nine hits and four runs over six and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one.

Fraser, the number-eight hitter for the Wheat Kings, led the way with two runs batted in, and went two-for-three on the day, while Travis Lantz had two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game, and turned one double play. The Wheat Kings didn't commit a single error in the field. Spence had the most chances in the field with six.

Sunday, the Wheat Kings claimed their first victory, over the Riverside Royals, 9-5.

Jones was the starting pitcher and surrendered one hit and one run over two innings, striking out two and walking none. McQuillin and Travis Lantz each appeared in relief for the Wheat Kings.

Moyer, McQuillin, Morwood, Jones, Briley Fraser, and Ryan Hawkins each collected one hit for the Wheat Kings, and Moyer, Morwood, and Jones each drove in two runs. The team had patience at the plate, accumulating 10 walks for the game. Conley, Lantz, and Jack Tiffin led the team with two walks each.

In their final game, Sunday, the Wheat Kings couldn't keep up with the Sarnia Brigade and fell, 16-1.

Chase Jones was the starting pitcher and gave up four hits and five runs over two innings, striking out two and walking two. Jones and Ryan Hawkins each collected two hits for the Wheat Kings. Hawkins went two-for-two at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.

The Wheat Kings players include Briley Fraser and Emmitt McQuillin of Kincardine, Ryan Hawkins of Walkerton, Jack Tiffin and Will Conley of Port Elgin, Travis Lantz of West Grey, Patrick Heenan of Drayton, Chase Jones of Arthur, Wyatt Moyer of Mount Forest, Oliver Morwood of Milverton, Joseph Spence of Meaford and Blaine Dowler of Harriston.

Coaches are Ryan Fraser, Chris Conley, Scott Jones, Brian Lantz, Jeremy McQuillin and Nathan Morwood.
