Wow, what an awesome Canada Day Party yesterday! All those who attended had their Canada gear on, HWY 19 sounded great as usual, and the camaraderie was top-notch! This day runs so smoothly because of so many amazing volunteers, and while we can’t even list them all, we thank everyone who planned the day, set up and tore down, cooked food, staffed the bars, decorated, cleaned up, crushed cans, moved tables and chairs, sold tickets and a ton of other tasks all day in the hot sun. A special thank you to Tom Geddes for loaning us the great shelters that kept the sun off, and later, the rain off during the wild rain and wind storm. We appreciated everyone in the crowd who brought chairs in during the rain, and then took them back out later for more music from the band. Congratulations to Sean Noble who took home $725 cash in the Legion 50/50 Canada Day draw. Finally a special thanks to Jill Hunter, our new ways and means chairperson, who organized the day. A great start, Jill, and we look forward to many more Legion events.

A big thank you to our Sergeant-at-Arms, Kirk Rutledge, and our Branch 183 Colour Party for marching in the Canada Day Parade yesterday morning, and for being present for the flag raising, especially in that hot sun.

In Kin Cares 50/50 news, we announced the June jackpot winner live at the Legion during our Canada Day celebrations. Congratulations to Tanya Leppington, whose lucky ticket (No. 505698429) won an impressive $9,600! If you weren't able to join us at the Legion or watch the live Facebook draw, here's what you missed. We were delighted to welcome Duncan Hawthorne to Branch 183 to help reveal our June winner. Duncan and his wife, Lesley, also made generous donations to both the Kincardine Legion and the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation. Their generosity and continued support of our community are sincerely appreciated.

The June draw produced our largest jackpot so far, a reflection of the tremendous support we've received from people throughout our community. Thank you to everyone who continues to purchase tickets and support this great initiative. The July draw is already off to a fantastic start, with the jackpot quickly approaching $10,000. Be sure to watch for the July calendar, which includes the dates for all the Early Bird draws.

Let’s catch up on some other winners from this past week. At the June Trivia Night, it was Team “Don’t Feed After Midnight” that came out on top at the end of the night. Please be aware we’re taking a little summer break and we will see all of you trivia fans once again in September.

At the Saturday Meat Draw, we didn’t have any double-dippers once again, with all eight prizes going out to different winners. But we have a double winner, as Al Topping won a meat prize and the 50/50 draw and took home a cash prize of $95.50. But wait, let me check my notes ... Al also won the 50/50 the previous weekend, so this is some kind of double-double perhaps?

We are working out the details for our next big event, the Veterans’ Barbecue and public open house, Friday, July 17, which marks the 100th Anniversary of the Legion. Watch our Facebook page for more details about this day, and if you know a veteran please let him/her know the date. The tentative times are as follows: 12-2 p.m. for the barbecue, and 3-7 p.m. for the open house, with live entertainment.

Wrapping up this weekend, don’t forget that we will have the Canada versus Morocco World Cup soccer match on both of big TVs at the branch this Saturday at 1 p.m., so come on in for a refreshing beverage and cheer Canada on!

Coming Events:

  • Friday, July 17 - Veterans’ Barbecue and Open House - more details to follow.

  • Friday, July 24 - Music Bingo Night - 7 p.m.

  • Sunday, July 26 - Family Dinner - 5 p.m. - Roast Beef
