Kincardine Legion Corner

If you haven’t heard by now, July 17 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. For the centenary, we have a full day of celebrations planned. From Noon to 2 p.m., we will be having a Veterans' Barbecue, which is free for veterans, spouses, widows and caregivers. If you know any veterans, help us spread the word and let them know about this event.

Following that, we will be gathering at the corner of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace for the dedication of the new Remembrance Crosswalk. This ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is open to Legion members and the public, so please join us. We will hear opening remarks from our Legion president and the mayor, followed by the ribbon-cutting and inaugural walk across this new community landmark.

After the dedication, we will be hosting an Open House back at the Legion, from 3-7 p.m. We will have live entertainment by "Eton Avenue," and free hot dogs, so even if you can’t make it for the crosswalk dedication, plan to come on down at some point to help us celebrate. We will be doing some building tours as well, so if you haven’t been all through our amazing building, this is a great opportunity.

During this, the 100th year of the Legion, you can join as a new member for free, and we will have our membership chair, Kim, ready to answer any questions, and to show you how to sign up. So far, we have welcomed 235 new members, so why not join us and take advantage of six months of free membership?

We are off to a great start for the July Kin Cares 50/50 Draw, with the jackpot already over $13,000. The first of two Early Bird draws will take place July 10, with a $500 prize up for the taking, followed by a second $250 Early Bird draw, July 17. Be sure to purchase your tickets before the first draw if you can, so you will be automatically entered into both Early Bird draws, as well as the grand prize draw at the end of the month. Watch for ticket-sellers at the Monday Markets, and you can buy them in person at the Legion, and at the Auxiliary Gift Shop located in the Kincardine Hospital, as well as on-line.

Winners at the Saturday Meat Draw included Tom, Marty, Karen, Logan, Scott, Lynn and Jamie, who was the double-dipper. Taking home a cash prize of $157 in the 50/50 draw, was Shannon Allen.

In other summer news, we have our next Music Bingo Night, Friday, July 24, which is a fun night of music and singing. A few days later we have our Family Dinner, July 26, at 5 p.m., with roast beef on the menu. And a lot of other fun activities are still going on, such as Line Dancing, Fiddlers, Darts, Bingo Nights (and burgers), and Jam Sessions. The Walkies Talkies have a few off-site excursions in July and then will take a break in August. There will be no Walkie Talkies or Jam Session, July 17, as that is our big 100th Anniversary Celebration.
