An underwhelming performance saw the Huron United Football Club fall by a score of 2-0 in its Tri-City Men's Soccer League (TMSL) game against Riverside FC B, July 7.
After conceding a late equalizer against Riverside in their first match-up of the season, Huron United was motivated to get out to an early lead. A series of carefully-deposited free-kicks from centre-back Simon Andonian kept Riverside's goal under threat. Surging full-back Anderson Wolfe nearly tucked a header into the far corner off a lofted cross from striker Gerrit Satosek, and shortly thereafter, holding mid-fielder Jacob Hunsburger pulled his shot just wide of the same post after winning the ball near the top of the box.
Unfortunately, Huron United's chance generation tapered off in the second half, and Riverside notched goals off a defensive miscue and then, shortly later, a screened shot that narrowly eluded keeper Josh Coleman's dive. Huron United was unconvincing on the ball and lacked attacking purpose in the final third.
Man of the Match honours in defeat went to the keeper, Coleman, for his aggressive play throughout, with honourable mentions going to Wolfe, fellow full-back Alex Friesen, and centre-back Shadi Dahrouj, who picked up an injury on a nasty Riverside challenge. The squad wishes him a speedy recovery.
Coming off that disappointing result, Huron United was back in action July 14 against rivals Simba FC. The temperature at Spinrite Field in Listowel was once again approaching 30y degrees Celsius at kick-off, so the match officials followed FIFA’s lead by implementing hydration breaks — details regarding sponsorship opportunities are forthcoming.
Simba earned a penalty in the first 10 minutes on a trademark exaggeration off contact. Huron United keeper Josh Coleman stood tall on his line while multiple Simba players bickered over who would take the spot kick, only for its taker to put a limp penalty over the net in the end.
Huron United built momentum off the missed penalty, weaving passes through Simba's defensive structure and threatening the goal with a variety of headers and shots in the box. Huron United out-chanced and out-pressured the opposition right up until the half-time whistle, but the match remained scoreless after 45 minutes.
Co-captain Gerrit Satosek nearly broke the deadlock twice in the early stages of the second half, narrowly putting his chances outside the frame. Full-back Ryan Carty caught Simba's back-line off guard, dispossessing its centre-back and blasting a shot that the keeper barely parried. His brother, striker Adam, followed that up with a left-footed rocket that scared the far post.
Huron United had a goal called back on a late out-of-bounds flag after Satosek's indefatigable effort produced a cross that winger Drew Cobean volleyed into the net. Yet another Huron United goal was disallowed for off-side in added time, and the score remained 0-0 at full time.
The team voted Jason Leiskau as Man of the Match for another heroic performance filling in at centre-back. Honourable mentions went to fellow deputized centre-back, Simon Andonian, Satosek, Andrew Wiegersma, and Friesen.
Huron United is playing out of the TMSL again this season.
