To start this week, we'd like to let everyone know that the Royal Canadian Legion has announced an important change to the annual National Poppy Campaign. Beginning in 2026, the campaign will run on the same dates every year, from Oct. 24 to Nov. 11. Previously, the campaign began on the last Friday in October, meaning its length varied from year to year. A consistent campaign period will give Canadians more opportunities to obtain and proudly wear a poppy, provide additional time to raise funds in support of veterans and their families, and make it easier for businesses, schools, and community organizations to plan their participation. It will also improve co-ordination and public awareness of the campaign across the country. The extended campaign will provide greater flexibility for volunteers as well, making it easier for members to contribute by helping with poppy boxes, staffing donation locations, or assisting with other campaign activities throughout the community.
Someone is guaranteed to take home more than $11,000, Aug. 4, in our July Kin Cares 50/50 Draw. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets this month and helped us set a new jackpot record. As of this writing, we are at more than $22,300. Tickets for the upcoming draw are available only until Friday, July 31 at 11:59 p.m. for on-line purchases. There's still time to get in on this record-breaking jackpot and support local health care while you're at it! Our July Kin Cares 50/50 winner will be announced LIVE, Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 4 p.m., from Kincardine Legion Branch 183. Join us in person or tune in on Facebook to see who wins big!
I’m happy to report that Elmer Lamont has not lost his lucky touch! At the Saturday Meat Draw, he was the double-dipper, winning two meat prizes, and you guessed it, he also won the 50/50 draw and took home $131.50. Congratulations, Elmer! Just so it’s not 100 per cent the Elmer show, let's also say congratulations to David, Gail, Doc, Jimmy, Cindy and Theresa who also took home a prize.
Music Bingo last Friday night was another great one, where we gave out more than $600 in cash prizes, as well as some other prizes for singing and dancing, and just looking as if you were having fun. Thanks to our volunteers in the kitchen who cooked up some food for the night, which was a welcome addition to a fun evening. We hope to see everyone at our next one, Friday, Aug. 21, with more new playlists. The country versus no-county debate continues, feel free to chime in.
You may have heard, but if not, we are going to have some random evenings at Thursday Night Bingo where all regular game prizes will be doubled. These will be random and not announced, so you'll have to be there to find out whether it's one of those nights. These are in appreciation of all our regular players who attend every week and support our Bingo Nights, thank you!
A reminder that renovation work is scheduled for the Club Room the week of Aug. 9-15. While the space will be closed for approximately one week during the project, members and guests are still welcome to visit. The downstairs hall bar will remain open, so you'll still have a place to relax, enjoy a drink, and catch up with friends. Thanks, in advance, for your understanding while we complete these upgrades to our branch.
Looking ahead, the Walkie Talkies will be taking a break in August and will be back together in September. As always, new members are most welcome! We won’t be having a Trivia Night or a Family Dinner in August, but we encourage everyone to check out the Kincardine Firefighters Association Beef Barbecue, Sunday, Aug. 23. We're still planning another Cornhole Tournament, but it has been re-scheduled to Saturday, Nov. 7. We'll let you know when registration opens. Lastly, hold this date open, Saturday, Sept. 12. We will be having an East Coast Kitchen Party, with some live Celtic music, so stay tuned for more details.
