A tightly-contested Tri-City Men's Soccer League match-up, July 28, against title-holders Red Academy, saw the Huron United Football Club emerge with a 2-1 win.
A curling cross from attacker Adam Carty created the first quality chance for Huron United, but winger Drew Cobean narrowly sailed his shot over the crossbar. Further opportunities came off of free kicks from centre-back Jason Leiskau and Carty again, with Huron United keeping Red Academy's keeper on his toes throughout the opening half.
The 0-0 score-line did not last long into the second frame, as a fantastic individual play from Red Academy's left winger broke the deadlock in the 47th minute with a deft shot tucked just inside the far post. Huron United responded well to the deficit, redoubling its efforts to push for an equalizer.
Huron United’s pressure yielded an opportunity to level the score in the 58th minute when striker Gerrit Satosek was brought down in Red Academy's box, sending Jason Leiskau to the penalty spot. Leiskau’s authoritative strike from 12 yards left the Red Academy keeper with no chance and evened the score at one apiece.
Huron United pulled ahead in the 85th minute off a lovely bit of skill from mid-fielder Simon Andonian, who played a long trivela pass through Red Academy's back-line into Satosek's path. Satosek coolly chipped the ball around the keeper for a 2-1 lead that Huron United did not relinquish.
With the victory (on his birthday, no less), manager Anirudha Panditrao quieted the segment of supporters intrigued by Masoom Saromie's successful management last week in Panditrao’s absence. Saromie enjoyed a triumphant return to the match-day squad after a long injury layoff, turning in a characteristically-poised performance at centre-back.
Satosek and full-back Ryan Carty split Man of the Match honours in the victory. Honourable mentions went to A. Carty and U21 call-up Jordan De Leur, who was a constant threat on the ball in his Huron United debut.
Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season.
