Another busy summer weekend around Purple Grove!
If you are into cattle and other animals, there was a terrific Jersey and Brown Swiss dairy show and all-breed beef show at Hanover Fair last weekend! About 40 Jersey animals, 35 or so Brown Swiss, and more than 100 beef animals for the various judges to place. Congratulations to the Hanover Agricultural Society, organizers, sponsors and exhibitors for a fine day!
The Herb and Ada Farrell family picnic was hosted this year by the family of Jack and Janet Farrell at the cottage home of Rob and Carolyn Farrell with about 70 folks in attendance. Shelters were set up ready in case of rain, but just a few drops came so no one got wet until some young people headed down to enjoy the lake! A delicious potluck lunch was enjoyed by everyone, featuring many favourite foods, including famous meatballs, lasagna, salads and of course, dirt pie and delicious butter tarts! Present was Uncle John Nother at 87 years young, and cousins enjoyed visiting with him and with Kim and Brad and their family who were home from the west. Jim Farrell asked folks for stories about Ada and Herb and of course, other stories of gatherings for processing chickens at the MacDonald's, farming with Uncle Jack, holidays in the city with Aunt Marion, Aunt Kay and Aunt Helen, hanging out with the Emmerton cousins, city kids coming to the farm, Grandma Ada's famous oatmeal cookies and bread, and memories of Uncle John and Aunt Ethel's wedding, were shared to the delight of all! Thank you very much to Rob and Carolyn for hosting again. It was a great time!
Also on Saturday, the streets of Lucknow were lined with spectators as the Tractor Parade celebrated its 14th year with 114 different models of antique tractors making the route around Lucknow! One of the favourite places on the route is touring around the driveway at Pinecrest Manor and we're sure the residents enjoy seeing those tractors too. Thank you to everyone who participated in that adventure!
We want to extend our best wishes to Carmen and Jeff Knapp and to Rachel and Dave Ortt on celebrating their 12th wedding anniversaries!
Also birthday greetings to Lane, Danica and Paisley Farrell, Jacqueline Pope, Sandra Farrell, Noah Lotton, Denise Eden, Cheryl Murray, and to Callie Van Dyke who is now three years old!
Paisley and Nora Farrell enjoyed a week with Dave and Debbie Wray and cousin Kyle at Bobcaygeon, fishing, swimming and camping with family members.
Lane Farrell (right) spent the weekend with his grandparents, Jim and Fran, helping Grandpa with chores and enjoying a sewing session with Grandma putting together a set of chaps for his cowboy outfit. It's amazing how some old jeans can have a new life!
Our sympathy is extended to the families of Shirley MacKinnon of Ripley and Kincardine, Christena Moulton of Kincardine, and Dale Walden of Amberley Beach. They will certainly be missed by everyone who knew them.
We wish our friends and family who have been in hospital, a speedy recovery as we sure miss seeing you around!

If you want to take a tour up to the Sandhill Creek Flower Farm, the sunflowers might last to the end of the weekend. They are so beautiful!
Mary Anne Kukoly was the guest of honour at a recent picnic of the McCosh Grove at Bruce Beach, Saturday of last week. There was lots of great food and visiting of the residents with tales of former adventures and history of the Grove. Thanks to the cottagers for hosting the afternoon and meal. There was a wonderful display of photos of days gone by and folks enjoyed the mini golf course too!
Bren de Leeuw, Ellen Waye, Betty Anne Thompson and Fran Farrell attended the Grey County Women's Institute Rally at Mount Forest United Church, Wednesday. Jennifer O'Reilly of Port Elgin was the stand-up comedian and the topic was humour and what makes us laugh! It was a fun day with lots of visiting, catching up, good food and the presentation of the Grey County scholarships to worthy recipients. Thank you to Woodland Springs W.I. for hosting a lovely day.
The Grey Bruce 4-H Judging Competition was held Wednesday evening at the Walkerton Agricultural Building and there was a great turn-out of 4-H members and volunteers. The classes to judge were beef and dairy calves, wheat seed, woodworking, life jackets, poultry, toilet paper and handwriting! That sounds challenging for sure and the members and visitors sure had fun with all the classes! Thank you so much to the Bruce and Grey 4-H Associations for the planning, all the sponsors for the food and prizes, the volunteers for helping out and congratulations to all the 4-H members and participants for taking part. It's the best way to gain valuable life skills for your shopping and decision-making!
