Brief downpour fails to dampen crowd at Kincardine's Marine Heritage Festival

A brief downpour failed to dampen the spirit of the crowd at the annual Kincardine Marine Heritage Festival, held Saturday at the Kincardine Harbour.

The Toronto Brigantine tall ship, Playfair, was at the north pier, with the crew greeting people and talking about the ship. Young and old, alike, enjoyed touring the vessel and trying their hand at helming the ship.

Operated by Brigs Youth Sail Training, a Hamilton-based charity, the Playfair’s mission is to provide experiential learning adventures for youth, aged 13-18. With the exception of the captain and first mate, all the crew are teenagers. The ship holds two adults and 26 youth.

The Marine Heritage Festival also featured tours of the Kincardine Lighthouse and the Walker House, a close-up look at the Mysis Rescue Boat, and a display of rescue equipment by Huron and Area Search and Rescue.

In addition, Mark Psutka and Ryan Moore of the HMS Psyche which is based in Port Credit, were on hand to talk about the ship which sailed the Great Lakes 200 years ago. They had a variety of artifacts recovered from the ship, including a cannon ball and an eye piece, that people could examine and hold in their hands.
