The Bervie Women’s Institute met at the Bervie United Church, Wednesday morning. President Bev Berndt welcomed everyone followed by the usual openings and land acknowledgement. Bev welcomed Mary Jean Belrose of the newly-formed Saugeen Shores Women’s Institute.
The Roll Call, “What did your female ancestors do to support the war effort,” was answered. Convener Janice Hewitt introduced the guest speaker, Kevin Larson, who spoke about women’s part in the war. Locally, this involved the Malcolm Furniture Factory and the mosquito planes which were manufactured in Canada. A highlight was the role women played at Malcolm Furniture during the war. Larson provided many historical facts and Kincardine stories. Janice thanked him and presented him with a gift.
Betty Jean White read the minutes of the last meeting and Sandra MacDonald gave the treasurer’s report. Information regarding the International Plowing Match (IPM) in Bruce County later this month, was provided by Bev and Betty Anne Thompson. Janice spoke about the process of naming a room for the Bervie W.I. at the new Kincardine Hospital expansion; a room has been selected. Sandra gave the Sunshine Report.
Donations will be made to the Alzheimer Society and the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation. Plans were discussed regarding the Grey Bruce Area Convention at Chepstow, Oct.1, and the Bruce District Rally also in Chepstow, Oct. 22 – several will attend these events. Thank you to Janice for the lovely treats.
The meeting closed with the Closing Ode and God Save the King.
The next meeting will be held at the home of Diane Wilson, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m.
