Edna Elaine Alton (nee Stewart), beloved wife of the late Ronald Alton of Lucknow, died at Wingham and District Hospital, Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, in her 94th year.
Born Jan. 20, 1933, in Goderich hospital, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Park) and Arthur Stewart.
Dear mother of Randy (Laurie) Alton of Lucknow, Blair (Barbara) Alton of London, and Kent (Jan) Alton of Clinton.
Greatly missed by seven grandchildren, Kelsie Murley (Ryan), Marlee Gowing (Ben), Scott Alton (Michelle), Benjamin Alton (Sarah), Tyler Brooks (Sarah), Dani Lindsay (Luke), and Mack Alton; and 11 great-grandchildren, Crew and Harvey Murley, Theodore and Penelope Gowing, Samuel Alton, Addison and Nora Brooks, Gus, Helmi, Tavi and Fitz Lindsay.
Survived by her brothers, Norman Stewart (Norma) and Richard Stewart (Leslie); sister-in-law, Eleanor Henderson (Paul); and brother-in-law, Lorne Alton.
Predeceased by her sister, Joyce Caesar, and brother-in-law, Paul Caesar; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Alton and Susan Alton; and stepmother-in-law, Mary Errington Rivett.
Edna grew up on a mixed farm on the Division Line in Ashfield Township and married the love of her life, Ronald Alton, who both shared a strong passion for horses and dedication to their community.
She gave her time generously to the Lucknow United Church, with the United Church Women (UCW) and choir, served on the Dungannon and Lucknow Agricultural Societies, Huron Trail Riders, mentored many young people with horses, and spent many hours supporting her sons and grandchildren at the hockey rink.
Edna led many fall fair parades with her beautiful Palomino horse and silver saddle, and participated in English equestrian events. Later, Ron and Edna took part in the standardbred industry with much success and created many friendships across the province.
Edna worked at Pinecrest Nursing Home, Lucknow, obtaining her PSW diploma, and was employed for 20 years enjoying the company of many great co-workers and residents.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, from 1-4 p.m., at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow.
The funeral will be held in the chapel, Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026, at 2 p.m., with interment to follow at Dungannon Cemetery.
Donations to the Dungannon Cemetery, Lucknow United Church, Huron-Bruce Minor Hockey, or Canadian Cancer Society, are greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
