The Kincardine Under-11 (U11) Cardinals Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) rep. baseball team travelled to Sudbury on the Labour Day weekend for the provincial championships, and played to a silver-medal finish.
Kincardine got off to a great start, beating the host team, Valley East (Sudbury) Junior Voyageurs, Friday night, 16-7.
The Cardinals played three games Saturday, losing their first game, 11-2, to the Dresden Tigers.
Facing elimination in the double knock-out tournament, Kincardine beat the Welland Junior Jackfish, 14-1, and local rival, the Clinton Mustangs. 9-7. after being down, 5-0, early in the game.
Those two victories Saturday thrust the Cardinals into the semi-finals Sunday morning, where they faced the DKMB (Delaware, Komoka, Mount Bridges) Rivercats and won handily, 13-2. This led to a rematch with the Dresden Tigers to play in the championship finals. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they ran out of gas at the end and lost, 10-1, against a very strong Tigers team.
It was a great weekend of baseball for the Cardinals to finish with a silver medal at the provincial championships!
