It came down to the wire in the first game of the first-round playoff double-header, Sunday afternoon, as the Kincardine Cubs senior men's baseball team grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 9-8, over the Lucan Irish 9, in the Midwestern Ontario Senior Baseball League (MOSBL), at Connaught Park, Kincardine.
The game was tied at eight in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler Middleton induced Paul Boyadjian to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored.
Kincardine collected 11 hits and Lucan Irish 9 Senior had seven in the high-scoring affair.
The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Boyadjian doubled down the left field line, and Michael Kritz singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
Lucan tied the game at two in the top of the third with the help of two Cubs’ errors.
Lucan flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits to take the lead, 8-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Owen Currie that drove in two.
Kincardine scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jordan Beisel singled, scoring one run, Travis Anderson drew a walk, scoring one run, Tristan Hill induced Pat Kritz to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, and Norman Connell singled, scoring two runs.
Anderson singled down the left field line, which helped Kincardine tie the game at eight in the bottom of the sixth off of Lucan closer and ex-Cub Tyler Middleton.
Kritz earned the win for Kincardine. The pitcher gave up four hits and two runs over four innings, striking out three and walking one. Middleton took the loss for Lucan Irish 9 Senior. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (zero earned) on one hit, striking out one and walking three. Griff Potter led things off on the hill for Kincardine. The hurler allowed three hits and six runs (four earned) over three innings, striking out five and walking four. Hill started on the hill for Lucan. The starting pitcher gave up 10 hits and seven runs over five innings, striking out one and walking two.
In game two, the Cubs were firing on all cylinders from the get-go, racking up 15 runs over five innings.
Kincardine got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Scott Austin singled, scoring one run, Paul Boyadjian doubled, scoring two runs, Michael Kritz singled, scoring one run, Zane Livingston drew a walk, scoring one run, and Travis Anderson doubled, scoring one run.
The Cubs scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Bester homered to right field, scoring three runs, Greg Stepaniak grounded out, scoring one run, and Kevin Zettler singled, scoring one run.
Kincardine added to its early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Boyadjian singled to centre field, Kritz singled to centre field, and Anderson grounded out, each scoring one run.
Pat Kritz earned the win for Kincardine. The starting pitcher surrendered four hits and one run over five innings, striking out one and walking three. Zach Haines started on the mound for Lucan. The pitcher surrendered 13 hits and 14 runs (13 earned) over two innings, striking out one and walking one.
The Cubs won the best-of-three series and now face the Woodstock Nationals in round two.
