You might have seen that Sept. 20-26 is National Legion Week. Dominion Command established this Canada-wide observance in 2023 to help tell the Legion story and remind people that you don’t need to have served in the military to be part of what we do. It always starts on the third Sunday in September in honour of Battle of Britain Day, which commemorates the decisive air campaign of 1940 and honours the courage and sacrifice of the Allied aircrews, particularly Canadians, who played a critical role in preventing a German invasion of Britain. With our big Centenary year under way and the Poppy Campaign just around the corner, we really wanted to use this time to say thank you. To our members, our behind-the-scenes volunteers, and the folks who step up every time we need a hand: you’re the whole reason our Branch is here and able to support our community. We couldn’t do it without you!
That said, don’t forget we are in Early Bird Renewal time for memberships. Renew anytime between now and the end of November for just $55, which saves you $10 off the regular price. Getting it done early also puts you in the running for some great monthly prizes. Renew before September runs out for a chance to win four tickets to our upcoming Duelling Pianos show, or renew in October for a shot at two tickets to our New Year’s Eve party with Adam Cousins. Getting your card renewed is quick and easy, whether you do it on-line or just pop by the Legion bar to settle up in person. We strongly encourage all of our veterans to renew their memberships at the branch or via E-transfer (kincardinelegion@gmail.com) to be sure to receive our special veterans renewal rate of $50. If you renew on-line it will charge you $55. If you have any questions about renewals, feel free to reach out to our membership chairperson Kim.
Exciting news! Branch 183 will be sponsoring a whole week of activities at the Davidson Centre during the week of Remembrance Day, Nov. 8-14. We have arranged to sponsor three public skates, a public swim, and the whole week of drop-in gym times. As we approach Remembrance Day, we encourage branch members to help out where they can and want to remind everyone that we will be having a morning to stuff envelopes, Thursday, Oct. 15.
We want to give a big thank you to Jim McDonald for donating his time and expertise to build a new main table for the club room. This table, where occasionally a little bravado is served, sits near the big TV. The new one is a little easier to get around, and looked great as the head table at Sunday’s general membership meeting - very executive!

We have some more exciting news for our Kin Cares 50/50 draw! Mike and the crew at Grey Matter Beer have agreed to guest host our mobile ticket terminal for the entire month of October, making it super easy to grab your tickets while enjoying a fresh local brew. To kick things off, we are doing our live September grand prize draw right at the brewery, Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. Come hang out, grab a pint, and see who takes home the massive September jackpot. You will also be among the very first to buy your October tickets from your seat at Grey Matter. Congratulations to Ashley Baldwin, last week’s $250 Early Bird winner with lucky ticket No. 119069337! Buying early definitely pays off, but you still have time to get in on the action. Our September jackpot is already sitting at more than $13,700, and tickets are on sale until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Cathy Alcombrack is having a great month, as she won the 50/50 draw again and took home a cash prize of $120, and also won a meat prize at the Saturday Meat Draw. Stephanie Rutledge was the double-dipper, winning two meat prizes.
Tonight (Sept. 24) is the final Burger Night at Bingo of the season, so come and enjoy burgers one last time. Next week, we will have chili on the menu before Bingo. Also, be sure to come to the Oct. 8 Bingo, as we will have 15 turkeys to give away that night.
Our Music Bingo is tomorrow night, Sept. 25, and we will be offering some food from 6-7 p.m. before we start the games. We will have mashed potatoes with two yorkshires, topped with beef and gravy, or beef on a bun for sale to fill you up before we play, and to give you energy for singing. A book of 10 cards, with two cards for each of the five games, is just $10, and don’t forget to wear your favourite band shirt.
Sign-up is now open for our next Trivia Night, which will be Friday, Oct. 2, so get your team of eight registered at the Legion bar.
We are getting low on tickets for our Great Canadian Duelling Pianos event, Friday, Oct. 9. So, if you are hoping to help support the BUILDKD-plus Campaign while being entertained at a fun-filled night, stop by the branch soon and get your tickets.
Good luck to everyone this weekend at the Branch Golf Tournament! The weather is looking good.
Also, don’t forget that next Wednesday is the introductory meeting for the new Men’s Shed Group, at 9:30 a.m. in the hall.
