The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is holding a free webinar, focused on protecting the Piping Plover.
Made possible through support from Ontario's Species at Risk Stewardship Fund, the webinar will be held Friday, Jan. 30, from Noon to 1 p.m. Registration is required.
The Piping Plover is an endangered shorebird that has been absent from the Lake Huron shoreline for more than 30 years. Its return to the Lake Huron coast suggests that ecosystem health is improving.
Facilitator of the webinar will be Karen Alexander, outreach and education co-ordinator with the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation.
The presenter will be Suzanne Robinson, management biologist, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
The webinar will provide general information pertaining to the Piping Plover, including identification and life history characteristics, as well as the species population and distribution in Canada and the United States, with a focus on the Great Lakes.
It will also identify habitat needs and the threats to the species. Lastly, it will share the recovery goals and approaches, including suggestions as to how people can become involved and how to report observations and information.
