Dear Editor:
“Earth Hour” strikes a sour note with me. Most of us in rural Ontario are already doing just about all we can to conserve energy, simply because it is too expensive not to.
We have rearranged our whole lifestyles, as far as humanly possible, to use electricity during off-peak hours. We all know about doing certain chores on the weekend, or after the magic hour of 7 p.m.
As we sit, warmly-dressed, in our cold, dark homes, dimly-lit by a few mercury-containing compact fluorescent bulbs or very expensive LED bulbs, what else are we supposed to turn down or off for this one hour on a Saturday night?
Oh, I guess I could have unplugged my fridge – but it doesn’t run that much anyway, since I keep the house so cold. And that reminds me, I’d really like to know why there is HST on home heating oil? It is a basic necessity of life.
I think “Earth Hour,” at least in Ontario, is out of date and a mere token. Conservation is something we should be doing every day – and many, or most of us, are already doing our best. We don’t need a reminder.
