No Canada Day fireworks in Point Clark this year

No Canada Day fireworks in Point Clark this year
For the first time in more than 20 years, there will be no Canada Day fireworks in Point Clark.

Earlier this year, the Huron Shores Lions Club asked Huron-Kinloss council for a bridge loan to assist the service club in putting on the event, with the expectation of receiving a federal government grant to cover the cost - grants are available for fireworks displays that are held on Canada Day.

However, in a letter, discussed at the council meeting Monday night (March 21), club president Brad Hand states that shortly after accepting council's offer of help, the Lions received a letter from the pyrotechnical company, indicating a substantial price increase for a display on Canada Day.

"if we were to go to the 2nd of July, the amount would be less, but we would lose any opportunity for a grant," writes Hand. "Neither situation is acceptable to us. After much discussion, and with regret, we are cancelling the fireworks. We will continue to work on other projects in the community and thank you for your interest."

"That's unfortunate," said mayor Mitch Twolan. "For the first time in 20-plus years, we'll have no fireworks on Canada Day in Point Clark."

"The fireworks are too expensive, given the huge price increase," said deputy mayor Wilfred Gamble. "If they went to July 2, they'd be cheaper, but they want it on Canada Day to be eligible for the grant."

"Yes, they can't get a grant unless the event is held July 1," said treasurer Jodi MacArthur.

"It's just too bad," said Gamble.
