The Nicol Insurance Kincardine Junior "C" Bulldogs had a two-game home stand on the weekend, hosting the Mitchell Hawks Friday night and the Walkerton Hawks Sunday afternoon.
Sunday’s game against Walkerton was an acid test for Kincardine with the season winding down and playoffs on the horizon, a path that will likely involve dealing with the Hawks again at some point in the post-season.
Goalie Mitch Campbell put in a solid performance for the 'Dogs, including stopping a Walkerton penalty-shot in the first period.
The Hawks drew first blood at the 15:20 mark of the first, but Kincardine responded well, outshooting Walkerton 13-12 in the opening frame.
Persistence paid off for Kincardine in the second, though, as Dalton Hnatko evened things up at 1-1 with his powerplay goal at the 18:11 mark, with helpers credited to Luke Inglis and Patrick Wiejak.
Momentum stayed with the 'Dogs as they then took the lead in the third period when Shawn Moore fed Sam Feagan. Feagan made no mistake, burying the puck in the twine at the 12:37 mark of the third for a short-handed marker. Walkerton pushed back hard and scored the equalizer at the 14:38 mark, sending the contest to overtime.
The Hawks controlled the extra time, registering the only shots of the frame, and scoring the game-winner at the 3:03 mark, denying the 'Dogs even a single point in the hard-fought contest.
Friday night’s game went far better for the 'Dogs, much to the delight of the enthusiastic super-sized, school-night crowd.
Mitchell opened the scoring just 3:02 into the first, but that would be the lone bright spot for the Hawks as the 'Dogs came back with a vengeance.
Sam Feagan got things rolling for Kincardine with his goal at the 7:43 mark of the second with Mike Osadca and Matt Baker drawing assists. Less than two minutes later, Gerrit Satosek scored to put the 'Dogs into the lead with Patrick Wiejak and Mike Smailes credited with the helpers.
Jordan Bell increased the lead to a 3-1 count with his goal at the 15:43 mark compliments of Jordan Van Haelemeesch and Riley Cook. Wiejak then closed out the scoring at 12:58 in the third with Luke Inglis and Matthew Mah drawing the assists, handing the Bulldogs the win by a final of 4-1.
The Bulldogs will close out the regular season by hosting the Hanover Barons this Friday, Jan. 30. Puck drop is 8:30 p.m., so come on out and cheer on the 'Dogs in their final home game before the playoffs start. We will see you at the rink.
