The Municipality of Kincardine and the Township of Huron-Kinloss have both agreed to fly the Community Living flag through the month of May which is recognized across the province as Community Living month.
Monday night, at the township's committee-of-the-whole meeting, Community Living supported-individuals Cassandra Ritchie, Donald Weatherhead and Jeffery Vande Klippe, and staff members Barb McNee and Beth French, thanked the township for for its ongoing support and commitment to the organization.
"Together, we are working hard to create an inclusive and caring community where all residents are welcomed and have equal opportunities," said Ritchie. "Community Living Month is a time to celebrate the abilities of all individuals, and embrace the diversity of our community."
This year, communities across the province are 'shining a light' on inclusion, and May 11, the CN Tower and other provincial landmarks will light up blue and green in honour of Community Living Month.
"We ask that the township will join us in celebrating the achievements and contributions that citizens of all abilities make by proudly flying the Community Living flag," said Ritchie.
To further raise awareness and help inspire new possibilities for individuals with developmental disabilities, Community Living of Kincardine and District has planned, and will participate in, several events through the month of May:
May 5: Hosting the annual Spring Fling dance at the Davidson Centre
May 7: Ashley Schultz's Polar Bear Birthday Dip off the North Pier at 5 p.m., followed by an Open Mic Night at the Bruce Steakhouse at 7 p.m.
May 14: Grace Dance Academy Recital featuring the CLKD Adult Fusion class
Community Living members will also be visiting several area schools to talk with students and teachers about bullying, inclusion, the R-word and to perform the Lighthouse Players Theatre Troupe's play, "Ian and Friends:"
May 10: St. Anthony's at 10:10 a.m.
May 17: KTTPS at Noon
Mayor Mitch Twolan and Huron-Kinloss council agreed to fly the flag and thanked Community Living for the delicious treats provided at the meeting.

Wednesday night, Community Living supported-individuals Jackie McDonald, Allan Moore, Jennifer McCullough and Bethany Collins, and staff members Angela Taylor and Jane Hoy, made the same presentation to Kincardine council, urging the municipality to fly the Community Living flag through the month of May.
"Community Living of Kincardine and District once again acknowledges our strong relationship with the Municipality of Kincardine and its staff and we express our thanks for your support, particularly in this month of May," said McDonald.
Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie accepted the flag from McDonald and McCullough and said the municipality is pleased to fly it this month. She also thanked Community Living for the wonderful treats provided at the council meeting, as wel as the thrill for members of council to be part of the group's dance video, prior to the meeting.
