After much work and waiting, the Kincardine Refugee Committee has accepted the first refugee family for the area.
The steering committee last week reviewed and decided to support the application of a family identified as “in high-need for re-settlement” by the Canadian government.
The family of four fled Iran due to political instability and is in Turkey waiting re-settlement. Coming to Kincardine is a mother, 45, and her three adult children. The children, two men and a woman, are between the ages of 21 and 24. The male spouse may join them in the coming year. They speak little English.
The steering committee believes that the Kincardine community will provide a warm welcome and a safe environment for the family as it starts a new life in Canada.
The family should arrive within the next four to 12 weeks.
When the committee received this high-need application, it learned that Kincardine is high on the list to receive a Syrian family when a sponsorship request becomes available.
The committee has raised enough to sponsor two families and is looking forward to the next opportunity to assist a family in need.
