KTTPS marks Earth Week; Elgin Market has visit from Peregrine Falcon

Nature and the environment were the focus at two local schools over the past couple of weeks.

At Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School, Becky Cohoon's Grade 1 class challenged other students to do a special class project in celebration of Earth Day in April. Each class put its project on Bristol board to hang in the front hall for everyone to see.

The students did everything from a whole day without using paper, to litter-less lunches, to collecting old markers to be recycled by Crayola, to picking up garbage, etc. It was amazing to see how KTTPS is keeping our earth healthy!

Meanwhile, at Ecole Elgin Market Public School, the students were captivated by a visit from "Nova" the Peregrine Falcon, May 5, learning about the protection of an endangered species. The visit was sponsored by Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

As the presentation moved into their recess time, the students unanimously put up their hands to stay and watch the show. The presence of a live bird of prey captured the attention and imagination of children in a way that no textbook can duplicate.

Since 2010, OPG has sponsored the Canadian Peregrine Foundation's visit to Bruce County schools. This year, OPG sponsored visits to Huron Heights, St Anthony's and Ecole Elgin Market (in Kincardine) and Arran Tara.
