Three local teens have been chosen to play baseball at the Ontario Summer Games, Aug. 11-15, in Mississauga.
Travis Anderson, 15, of Kincardine, Tanner Reid, almost 15, of Ripley, and Carson Watson, 15, of Ripley, will be part of the regional Western Ontario Baseball team, representing this region. They will play in a three-day Under-15 tournament, with all teams vying for the provincial title of Team Ontario.
The Ontario Summer Games event takes place every two years and is a showcase of amateur sport, representing provincial level athletes, ages 12 to 18, qualifying through a regional selection process.
The games will be Baseball Ontario's Bantam Affiliate All-Star Tournament, with 12 teams competing on three diamonds.
Travis, Tanner and Carson have been playing baseball together in Kincardine since Mosquito level. All three have a strong commitment to the sport and credit quality coaching by Jay Bell and Steve Travale throughout the years, for leading them to this success.
This has been a significant year for baseball for all three players. As Grade 9 students at Kincardine District Secondary School, they were part of the first KDSS baseball team. Also, as second-year Bantams, they play with the Kincardine Cardinals Bantam Team, Kincardine Cardinals Bantam OBA team, and the WOBA Bulls Major Bantam team.
During the past month, the three players went to Clinton and Hanover for try-outs, and from those performances, they were selected for the Summer Games. All three are excited to be chosen and look forward to the event.
Travis is the son of Shamus Anderson and Laurie and Jay Bell; Reid is the son of Larry and Kim Reid; and Carson is the son of Dean and Sonya Watson.
For many young athletes, the Ontario Summer Games is the high-point of their sporting career, while for others, the Games are a stepping stone for the Pan Am Games or even the Olympics.
