It wasn’t necessarily the results the Kincardine Home Hardware Novice Kinucks were anticipating, but the league leaders escaped the weekend with a tie and win against Walkerton and Mount Forest, respectively.
The Walkerton Capital Novices, with a mere four regular-season wins, shocked the host Kinucks Saturday afternoon as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie.
Walkerton capitalized on its early scoring chances and jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening frame.
Brandon Bishop was able to cut the lead in half before the end of the second from Nolan Janes and Trent Houghton.
Early in the third, Bishop was once again able to find the back of the net with the tying marker from Aiden Renaud and Houghton.
Jack Anderson settled in and played solid after an early onslaught to preserve the tie for the Kinucks.
Kincardine travelled to Mount Forest Sunday afternoon and put forth a much better effort against the Rams.
It was Kincardine this time soaring after the opening puck drop. Defenceman Murray Collins buried the opening tally, unassisted, midway through the first. Houghton followed a few minutes later from Bishop and Collins to make it 2-0.
The Kinucks added three more goals in the second period and sailed to a one-sided 5-0 win. Scoring in the second, were Janes, Jude Hodgins, and Evan Graham. Assists were awarded to Hodgins, Renaud, Janes, Gavin Beaty, and Jordan McDonald.
Rowan Cherrett earned the shut-out for Kincardine.
The weekend results improve the Kinucks' regular-season record to 14-1-3 and sole possession of first place.
