Knechtel Food Market in Lucknow to close July 27

July 17, 2016

Kathy and Brian Knechtel (right) of Knechtel Food Market in Lucknow have announced they will be closing the store July 27.

The grocery store has been a fixture in the village for 30 years, with the current location at the corner of Campbell Street and Bruce County Road 1.

The Knechtels announced on Facebook that the reason for the closure is that Knechtel Food Market and its landlord cannot resolve their disagreement over what would be a fair rent for the Knechtels to pay for the premises. Extensive negotiations to acquire the property, at an amount which would allow the business to continue to operate, have also proven unsuccessful.

"The reason for this short notice is because July 12, the landlord gave Knechtel Food Market 15 days' notice to vacate the leased premises unless Knechtel Food Market paid the amount demanded by the landlord," state the Knechtels. "The landlord, thereafter, refused Knechtel Food Market's request for 60 days in order to conduct an orderly winding down of its grocery business and to better prepare its dedicated staff.

"We sincerely thank you for your support over the years."
