Dr. Michael Emond of Kincardine has announced he is retiring and leaving his practice at the Hawthorne Community Clinic in Kincardine, at the end of October.
"Unfortunately diabetes has begun to take its toll on my health, and I am no longer able to continue in full-time practice," Emond stated in a letter to his patients.
The good news, he said, is that Dr. David Blecher will be taking over Emond's medical practice, effective Nov. 1.
"I have worked with this young physician and I am quite confident that he'll be able to assume my role as your primary care provider, and that there will be no orphan patients as result of my leaving," said Emond. "My plan is to work through September, and with him through October, so that he can get to know you and can ask me any questions that may arise regarding your health issues."
He said he will miss his patients most of all, especially since he has cared for some families for three to four generations.
"It's hard to believe that it has been 44 years since I first entered the halls of the University Of Toronto Medical School," said Emond. "I had a full head of hair then! What a pleasure and honour it has been to assist so many patients with their health care over the last 39 years here in Kincardine.
"Thank you for putting your trust and confidence in me over these many years and I hope that I have been able to help many through the difficult times, as well as sharing many good times.
"Our paths may cross again as I will be doing some fill-in and locum work for the group over the next two years as the needs of the group dictates, on a part-time basis."
He gave special mention to his family which has done without a dad and husband on many occasions and supported him throughout his career.
"To paraphrase General MacArthur, 'Old physicians never die, they just fade away, with stethoscope in hand'," said Emond. "Wishing you all the best; you will be greatly missed by me."
Aug. 3, Kincardine council approved an agreement with Blecher to join the Kincardine Physicians Group - he is the fifth new doctor to come to Kincardine this year.
