Bruce Power's Unit 7 ends record run with planned maintenance outage

For 487 consecutive days, Bruce Power’s Unit 7 has been providing the people of Ontario with 822 megawatts of carbon-free electricity at 30-per-cent less than the average residential price of power.

 

Friday, the unit was removed from service to begin a planned maintenance outage that will see millions invested into the unit as part of Bruce Power’s Asset Life Management Program, which will help the unit run safely and reliably through to its scheduled refurbishment.

 

“During the outage, thousands of tasks will be completed by Bruce Power staff, as well as hundreds of contractors who have been hired from across the province for their expertise in outage activities,” said Pierre Pilon, senior vice-president, Bruce B.

“Our outage programs create thousands of jobs and inject hundreds of millions of dollars, annually, into our local and provincial economies through the procurement of materials, hiring of skilled labour and investing of private dollars into publicly-owned assets.”

 

Cobalt-60 will also be harvested from the reactor, before being processed by Nordion, which sterilizes 40 per cent of the world’s single-use medical devices, including gloves, masks and stents.
