'Tis the season for cheque presentations and other items

'Tis the season of giving and there has been an absolute plethora of cheque presentations over the past few weeks.

Donna Sue Errington and her Zumba class held a Zumbathon, raising $1,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association of Grey-Bruce.

Fraser Clarke and Victoria Zambito, organizers of the 7K Trail Challenge, donations $2,066 to the Kincardine Trails Association, proceeds from this years’s run.

Organizers of the Bruce Telecom Lighthouse Blues Festival presented $4,000 to the Kincardine Lions Club. Since its inaugural event in 2010, the festival has donated more than $40,000 to community organizations - $34,000 to the Lions Club, alone, in the past five years.

The Kincardine Legion donated $100 to Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce.

The Kincardine Bridge Club donated $2,000 to the Women's House Serving Bruce and Grey. Organizer Sheila Murray said the club had a very supportive summer, with about 30 players paying $3 each per Friday to play bridge in the new seniors' room at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine. Tom Rajnovich directed and managed the club this summer. The club has been in operation since 1997 when it started in the Presbyterian Church. The Society of Energy Professionals made a donation to the Kincardine Agricultural Society to support the children's activities at the Kincardine Fall Fair.

The Power Workers' Union presented $25,000 to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation. The donation will be used to help purchase a portable digital imaging X-ray machine for the Kincardine hospital. The Power Workers' Union has donated $118,500, to date, including this donation, plus yearly support through the Bruce Power Golf Tournament.

The Kincardine Women's Triathlon presented a $1,000 donation to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Central and Arctic Region, Mysis Unit No. 235 of Kincardine.

Lynda Cain of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), presented a $2,500 donation to the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN) for tree-planting within the watershed. OPG has been a 15-year supporter of the not-for-profit environmental organization.

The Kincardine Theatre Guild held a cabaret/variety show and from the proceeds, presented a donation of $3,064 to the Kincardine Refugee Fund-raising committee.

The Kincardine and District Lions Cub presented a donation to PRANCE in Port Elgin.

Ecole Elgin Market Public School student Liane Mercanti had the winning poster for her school in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, sponsored by the Kincardine Lions Club. Students aged 11, 12 and 13, as of No. 15, were eligible to enter the contest. The theme for the posters was, “A Celebration of Peace.”  Liane’s peace poster advanced to the next level of competition.

Al McLean ,Andy Burgess and Norval Catto were honoured by receiving certificates and pins commemorating their 50 years of service to Masonry at Kincardine Northern Light Lodge, No. 93.

Imad Ahdab recently visited Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton to give talks to the World Religion classes about Islam, Arabic culture, and racism. A former resident of Bruce-Grey and friend of teacher Samantha Easton, Imad has entertained SHHS students for many years with his funny, rich, and sometimes biting commentary on what it’s like to be a follower of Islam in a rural area. The students ask for Imad to return every year, and the school looks forward to welcoming him back next semester.
