Highway 9 house fire loss estimated at $300,000

A house fire at 5704 Highway 9, Saturday, Feb. 14, has resulted in an estimated loss of $300,000.

Kincardine firefighters were called to the blaze at 11:32 p.m., where they found a single-storey home with heavy smoke conditions, said Kincardine fire chief Kent Padfield.

Crews from Kincardine and Tiverton stations worked through the night in frigid temperatures to extinguish the fire. Mutual aid was requested from the Ripley-Huron Fire Department for a water tanker and additional manpower.

The home was destroyed, but nobody was injured, said Padfield.

“ A team entered the house and attempted to extinguish the fire but had to exit due to interior fire conditions," Padfield said. "The extreme cold again made firefighting difficult. Firefighter gear, airpacks, apparatus and fire hoses were freezing.

It takes several hours after the firefighters return to the station to thaw equipment, trucks and clothing.

The fire is under investigation by the fire department.
