Youth compete at Kincardine Legion public speaking contest

A dozen youth took to the stage Saturday morning for the annual Kincardine Legion public speaking competition.

Four youngsters in Grades 2 and 3 at St. Anthony's School, competed in the storytelling division, with the following receiving certificates for their performance:

  • Eden Babbitt, first, "The Gruffalo"
  • Kina Henry, second, "The Gruffalo"
  • Joseph Weerasinghe, third, "Charlie Cook's Favourite Book"
  • Dorothy Radford, fourth, "The Giving Tree"


There were five competing in the junior category (Grades 4-6), with the following receiving certificates for their performance:

  • Liane Mercanti of Ecole Elgin Market Public School, first, "Diabetes"
  • Samantha Castillo of St. Anthony's School, second, "The Truth Behind the Tiara"
  • Elle Cottrill of Ecole Elgin Market, third, "We Day"
  • Tyler Johns of Huron Heights Public School, "If I Ruled the World"
  • Harleen Gill of Huron Heights, "Wind Turbines"


Three youth in Grades 7-8, competed in the intermediate division, with the following receiving certificates for their performance:

  • Amelia Arciszewski of St. Anthony's School, "Importance of the Now"
  • Tied for second - Sheetal Gill and Hesther Page, both of Huron Heights Public School, "Phantom Power" and "Childhood Obesity," respectively


All of the contestants did a superb job in preparing and giving their speeches. Most had done an extensive amount of research on their subjects, and many were able to give their speeches without the use of cue cards or notes.

The first-place winners will go on to the Legion Zone C-1 public speaking competition in Goderich, Saturday, March 7, beginning at 9 a.m.
