I would like to respond to Susan Novak's letter. I think she should get all the facts before slandering a very important and needed business in Tiverton.
Her remarks about the retirement residence being poorly managed, were uncalled for and unfounded. I have worked at this retirement home for more than nine years so I feel qualified to respond.
To clear things up, there is a registered nurse on premises 24 hours per day; unfortunately, there are events that take place that cannot be prepared for in advance, such as an ambulance in a crisis. Emergency medication prescribed by a doctor is also something that can't be planned in advance.
As far as sustaining the residents with food and supplies, we are replenished every week and have supplies for even longer. As you may recall, last year, the roads were closed for five-plus days and even the local store ran out of supplies such as milk and bread. Milk is something you can't stock up on for more than a week.
If someone in your family was having a medical crisis or your house was on fire, what would you do? Yes, Tiverton has its own fire station, but would it be enough?
The "Pearly Gates" need to be opened for ALL emergencies but ONLY when the two main accesses are closed. Yes, getting hydro employees to work is important too. The gates should be closed any other time.

RE: "Additional traffic no worse than windmills, says reader" and "Reader agrees about opening gate versus wind turbines"
So are Mary Allen and Teri Morris recommending that we fight to keep the gate (on Victoria Street, Inverhuron) closed, as hard as we are fighting to keep the windmills out?
