High wind and heavy drifting caused the closure of several roads Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 24), and the cancellation of school buses and events.
The storm blew in throughout the day and by 12:45 p.m., Highway 21 between Amberley and Goderich was closed by the OPP.
Two hours later, Highway 21 from Goderich to Port Elgin was declared closed, along with Highway 9 from Kincardine to Walkerton, and Bruce County Road 86 from Amberley to Wingham.
South Bruce OPP reported that the storm was expected to continue into the evening, and that secondary road travel was extremely poor, with visibility nil at times. Police urged motorists to stay off the roads.
Meanwhile, school buses were cancelled, in-town as well as out-of-town, due to the blowing and drifting snow, leaving students stranded at Kincardine and area schools.
Parents were contacted to pick up their children at Ecole Elgin Market, Huron Heights and Kincardine Township-Tiverton public schools, St. Anthony's School and Kincardine District Secondary School. A billeting program for out-of-town students was being implemented, where required.
At Ripley-Huron Community School and Lucknow Central Public School, parents were also contacted to pick up their children. And at Brookside Public School, students were being picked up at the school or delivered to their homes.
Numerous events were cancelled Tuesday evening as well.
