Huron OPP remind public of citizen self-reporting - a convenient option

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The Huron County OPP reminds residents that the online Citizen Self-Reporting System remains available for all citizens to report specific occurrences.
You make the report, at your convenience, without the need to attend an OPP detachment or call the OPP Provincial Communications Centre (PCC). Citizen Self-Reporting was launched by the OPP July 7, 2014, in an effort to improve efficiencies and expand service delivery to the public.

Take for instance this scenario. You forget to lock your vehicle doors and you wake up to notice someone has rummaged through your car and has stolen your sunglasses and cell phone. If you don’t have a suspect in mind, you could use the Citizen Self-Reporting System. In a matter of a couple minutes, you can report this crime on-line from the comfort of your home when it is convenient for you to do so. You will also be provided with a police occurrence number which you may require if you plan on submitting an insurance claim.

On-line Citizen Self-Reporting was a very convenient and user-friendly way of reporting for a local business owner.

We discovered some minor vandalism to our shop last December and we didn’t have a suspect in mind. I had heard about on-line citizen self-reporting so I thought I would give it a try.  It was quick, easy and it worked out great for us. I would encourage others to give it a try if they don’t need to see an officer.” - Jason Cook, Owner – Bluewater Body & Fender

Citizen Self-Reporting provides a convenient and user-friendly alternative to report crime and at the same time, it allows the OPP to be more efficient with our resources. Front-line officers will be able to focus their efforts on targeted enforcement initiatives and crime prevention strategies within our communities.

Here are the answers to some questions you may have:

  • How do I use the system? To access the system, go to www.opp.ca/reporting

  • What types of crimes can I report? Thefts under $5,000, Damage to Property under $5,000, Thefts from vehicles, Lost or Missing Property.  Note:  Only occurrences that do not involve an injury, suspect or evidence are applicable

  • Can I use this system in the event of an emergency? No, DO NOT use this system. Call 9-1-1 immediately

  • What if I want to see an officer, Do I have to use the system? If you prefer, you may still contact the OPP by phone to make your report and have an officer attend. The 24-hour OPP toll-free number is 1-888-310-1122

  • How secure is my information that I submit on-line?  All information submitted via the Citizen Self-Reporting System is confidential and secure from hacking and other forms of electronic intrusion

Of course you never want to be a victim of a crime; however, if you find yourself needing to make a report to police, you now have another convenient option.  Give it a try at www.opp.ca/reporting
