(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) – A 28-year-old driver now has a scheduled court date after he was caught racing Thursday morning, March 12.

Just before 7:30 a.m. a Huron County OPP officer observed a Ford cube van travelling westbound on Amberley Road near Eighteen Mile Line at a high rate of speed. *THESE CHARGES HAVE YET TO BE PROVEN IN COURT*

HISTORIC TRAIN STATION DEFACED WITH GRAFFITI

(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County OPP officers are investigating an overnight mischief to East Street Station located on Maitland Road North in Goderich.

At approximately 2:15 a.m., March 12, a Huron OPP officer on patrol discovered fresh graffiti had been sprayed on an exterior wall and a window at the historic railway station. Officers also discovered a train car, that was parked nearby, had been tagged with fresh graffiti.

Any person with information regarding this incident should immediately contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or (519) 524-8314.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

DISTRACTED DRIVING CAMPAIGN SET TO BEGIN

(HURON COUNTY, ON) -  Huron County OPP officers will be commencing a week-long distracted-driving campaign starting Saturday, March 14.

The local detachment will be working in conjunction with OPP officers throughout the province. During this week, additional focus will be placed on education and enforcement of the legislation pertaining to the use of electronic devices while operating motor vehicles.

Last year, 47 drivers were charged in Huron County during the March Distracted-Driving Campaign. The current fine for using a hand-held communication device while driving a motor vehicle, is $280. Additionally, drivers who drive without due care and attention and allow themselves to be distracted by other activities, can also be charged with the offence of Careless Driving, pursuant to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The OPP’s 2015 collision data is shaping up to see a seventh consecutive year in which inattentive driving surpasses impaired driving as a causal factor in the fatal collisions it investigates. Both of these fatality categories are dangerous, preventable driving behaviours that result in the senseless loss of life on Ontario roads every year.

What can you do to help?

  • Be mindful that distracted driving poses a significant threat to the well-being of your family and friends

  • Start conversations about distracted driving with your family, your friends, your colleagues, and shed the negative light on it that it deserves

  • If you are in a vehicle being driven by someone who is driving while distracted, always speak up. Be firm and say: “Enough! Too many people are dying because of distracted driving. It needs to stop and you need to stop.” Make this your new attitude every day

  • If you see someone driving in a dangerous manner while driving distracted, call 9-1-1 to report them

  • Be self-disciplined every time you get behind the wheel; do not allow yourself to be distracted in any way while you are driving
