A crowd of Kincardine residents, decked out in red-and-white, braved the hottest Canada Day celebration on record, Sunday, but most of them were sticking to the shade, avoiding the intense heat.

The Kincardine Legion Colour Party led off the parade which formed up at Quinn Plaza and then marched through downtown Kincardine to Harbour Street, and from there, down to the flag pole for the ceremony.

Following the Colour Party, were the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb, Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie, the Kincardine Air Cadets, a couple of floats and a car full of veterans.

Mike Walsh of the Canada Day committee, welcomed everyone and urged people to come closer for the ceremony, but people stayed in the shade.

Lobb pointed out that for the past two Canada Day celebrations, it was cold and rainy with gale-force winds.

“We'll take this beautiful weather,” he said. “I'm so thankful that we live in such a great country. Celebrate Canada 151! Have a great long weekend!”

“What a vast and beautiful country we have,” said Eadie. “From sea-to-sea, we have one of the most inclusive and tolerant countries in the world. In the Municipality of Kincardine, we are a multicultural community, but we still celebrate our Scottish roots. And we'll be doing that next weekend at the Kincardine Scottish Festival, and in August at the Kincardine Reunion.

“Thank you to the Kincardine Legion, the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, the Air Cadets, and all the volunteers who put this together every year. Happy Canada Day!”

Brad Kirkconnell of the Canada Day committee, also wished everyone a Happy Canada Day. “Welcome to Kincardine. Buy Canadian!”

The crowd sang “O Canada,” as the Canadian flag was raised, and then it was off to McPherson Park were there were activities throughout the afternoon, including entertainment by Steve Deer and Friends, races and games for the children, and the Kincardine Lions Barbecue.

Canada Day ended with fireworks over Kincardine Harbour at dusk.
