The Nicol Insurance Kincardine Junior "C" Bulldogs played back-to-back games prior to their Christmas break, earning two of a possible four points.
Friday night, the league-leading Walkerton Hawks rolled into town looking to dig their talons into the 'Dogs, but the 'Dogs were anything but docile.
Kincardine came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, peppering the Walkerton net with 20 shots in the opening frame. Gerrit Satosek sent the twine flying for the home side with his goal at the 12:34 mark of the period, with Shawn Moore and Jordan Bell drawing the assists.
The second period saw the Hawks push back, thanks in no small part to their work on the powerplay. Working with a two-man advantage, the Hawks scored to tie the game at the 6:00 mark, and then took the lead in the dying second of the second penalty with a goal at the 7:34 mark.
Jordan Van Haelemeesch got things back on equal footing when he beat Tristan Lewis at the 11:59 mark with helpers to Luke Czuczman and Derrick Bernath. The game would be decided in the third.
Patrick Wiejak was set up by Brycin Morrison at the 1:27 mark of the third, but the lead was short-lived as the Hawks tiee things up again just over a minute later. Walkerton struck again on the powerplay at 11:05, and with the 'Dogs still reeling from that goal, Walkerton added an insurance marker 45 seconds later to take the game by a final of 5-3.
Saturday, the Dogs bounded into Mount Forest for a tilt against the Pats, looking to shake off the disappointment of the loss against the Hawks.
Shawn Moore staked the 'Dogs to the early lead with his goal at the 6:29 mark of the first, with Jordan Bell and Mike Smailes credited with assists. Kincardine then exploded in the second period with a three-goal barrage in under two minutes to take a commanding lead. Wiejak scored Kincardine’s second goal at 10:38 with Bell and Luke Inglis assisting, followed by an unassisted marker by Brady Richards, and then Bell finished the flurry with Inglis and Satosek assisting at the 12:23 mark.
The Patriots scored their first goal on a delayed penalty, taking advantage of the extra attacker at the 18:31 mark. Kincardine responded well with Brycin Morrison restoring the four-goal cushion when he converted a pass from Derrick Bernath at the 18:44 mark. Mount Forest scored again at the 19:39 mark to send the game to the third with the 'Dogs leading 5-2.
The Pats struck twice more, but their effort fell short, sending Kincardine home with a well-earned two points.
The 'Dogs are on the road, and won’t return to home ice until Jan. 3, 2015, for a game against the Goderich Flyers. The game is a special one as it will be the annual ‘Skate with the Bulldogs’ game.
Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m. - please note the time change from the original schedule - and kids of all ages are welcome to join the 'Dogs on the ice for a fun skate and autograph session after the game. Remember—all skaters MUST be wearing a helmet.
We’ll see you at the rink! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Nicol Insurance Kincardine Bulldogs.
