UNSUCCESSFUL SCAM ATTEMPT
(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – June 18, at 10:43 a.m., the South Bruce OPP received the report of a scam attempt from a resident of Huron-Kinloss Township.
A cheque arrived in the mail from “Publisher’s Clearing House” for $14,622 which was found to be worthless at the bank. Fortunately, this scam attempt was identified and it failed.
The South Bruce OPP is sending another warning for area residents to watch for cons and scams. They are being attempted every day because they represent income when they are successful. The only way to beat them is to ensure that they don’t get paid.
Tech-savvy con-artists can create very convincing scams that are only limited by their imagination. A common ploy is they pretend to be an employee of a large, established company or even a government agency, such as Canada Revenue Agency. Company logos or letterheads can easily be copied with a computer.
Your best defence is to verify the E-mail, phone call, letter or stranger at the door, before you ever consider sending money or sharing personal information. Contact the real agency to verify the unsolicited contact. Get the number yourself; don’t rely on the contact information provided.

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER
(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON.) – In less than a week, students will be out on summer break and the South Bruce OPP would like to see them enjoy the summer months safely. We can expect an increase in the amount of pedestrian traffic as scooters, in-line skates, skateboards and bicycles take to the streets and sidewalks.
The South Bruce OPP is offering the following tips for a safe and enjoyable summer:
Slow down and drive with care, especially near parks and recreation centres
Use crosswalks or intersections to cross streets safely. Never step out into traffic between parked cars
Bicycle helmets are required by law and reduce the risk of head injury by 85 per cent when worn properly
Ensure that swimmers are always properly supervised
Never leave pets or children unattended in a hot car
Follow your children on-line. If you’re not connected with them – who is?
Parents and caregivers are asked to review safety rules with their youth. Summer time may be a break from learning, but it can’t be a break from safety.
