Readers have opposing views about wearing a face mask

RE: “Mandatory face-mask order to coincide with provincial Stage 3 re-opening”

Thank you to Melody Caissie of West Grey for her letter.

I totally agree.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit has almost no cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in this large area. We have done that through the lock-down and Stages 1 and 2 of re-opening without mandatory mask-wearing.

So, when we have all carried out staying home and social/physical-distancing so well for so long, why do we need such a restrictive measure?

To the Editor:
RE: "Mask-wearing is a ridiculous mandate, says reader"

In response to the person who, basically, thinks wearing a mask is ridiculous: Yes, you may have only a few cases of COVID-19 in your area, but it only takes one person to spread the virus.

I personally choose to do the right thing by wearing a mask for my protection and for others. I would prefer to listen to the advice of medical professionals and scientists.

I don't understand why some people make such a big stink over wearing masks - masks which, I may add, DO actually make a difference in controlling the spread. Have you followed the news in the United States? Ignoring the professionals has really worked well for the people there.

Perhaps you should speak to a family that has lost a loved one to COVID-19.

We should be working together to do whatever we can to contribute to slowing the Coronavirus.

To me, it is a no-brainer.

The powers that be are NOT mandating mask-wearing "just because," they are doing it to save lives and to, hopefully, get our economy and lives back to normal.

If you ask me, it is an infringement on my right to life when people choose not to do something as simple as wearing a mask.
