Drive safely this Canada Day holiday weekend

(HURON COUNTY, ON) -  Huron County OPP officers are well-prepared for what is expected to be a busy weekend for those celebrating the start of summer this Canada Day Weekend. With the increase in traffic throughout Huron County’s roads, motorists can expect a high level of visibility from the local detachment officers.

“The goal of our Canada Day Weekend Traffic Safety Initiative is to ensure motorists are driving in a responsible and safe manner leading to a weekend free of preventable deaths and injuries on our roadways, waterways and trails," says Huron County OPP sergeant Charlene Pollard.

Officers will be focusing their patrols on the “Big Four” - the four main causes of motor vehicle collision deaths:

  • Distracted Driving
  • Speeding/Aggressive Driving
  • Impaired Driving
  • Lack of Occupant Restraint

To date, Huron County OPP has seen an increase in Impaired and Over-80 charges compared to this time last year - rising to 42 from 23 in 2014.

Additionally, the number of fatalities from collisions in Huron County has risen this year, to seven from four in 2014.

Those who choose to put themselves and others at risk of a collision by driving irresponsibly and in an unsafe manner need to change their mindset.

Always think safety. Wear your seatbelt, obey the speed limit, avoid distractions and always commit to driving sober.

Enjoy your Canada Day holiday weekend in a responsible and safe manner.
