We need stop lights at Kincardine Avenue and Highway 21, says reader
To the Editor:
Yes, there is a serious problem at the intersection of Kincardine Avenue/Southline and Highway 21. Too many accidents, by far. Since everyone is in such a hurry, distracted, etc., a solution that works for all will be needed.
Putting in a round-about, maybe, but consider what crosses there – large pieces of farm equipment and most of them are huge and getting bigger, semi's with often double trailers, emergency vehicles, to name just a few.
Look at the cost and expansion needed - engineers and others just to figure out how this would occur; plus, the time this intersection would be closed due to construction, and having to find a feasible solution for rerouting traffic, for safety concerns.
This is a farming community and farmers need accessy to the local grain elevators. Unfortunately, that means using Highway 21 to reach the elevators from the surrounding farms.
Since we have already had stop lights at this intersection, and turning lanes are there now, it makes more sense to just reinstall the stop lights permanently and carry forth. Less confusion, less money and I am sure this would the best solution at this point in time for everyone.
Round-abouts can be a bit confusing, especially when a high volume of traffic is occurring. Also, more room is required to accommodate large farm machinery, such as combines.
Everyone is familiar with stop lights and to me, they would be more effective at this intersection.
While looking at this solution, here's another to ponder: Highway 21 at the P&H elevators (formerly Lowry Grain).
Can an alternative route to the elevators be established off Concession 12 and Concession 10; thus, avoiding Highway 21 for the most part, because of the high traffic flow? Or can turning lanes be added for the safety of farmers delivering their crops to the elevators?
I've already heard of some close-calls between automobiles and farm vehicles turning in there.
