Three buildings tagged with graffiti in Goderich

(GODERICH, ON) -  Huron County OPP officers, including members from the Huron OPP Property Crimes Unit, are currently investigating three connected mischief occurrences that took place overnight in Goderich.

Officers were notified of the damages early this morning (June 30) after an employee noticed the graffiti on his way into work. In total, three buildings, all located in the southeast quadrant of Goderich, were vandalized with offensive graffiti.

The following buildings were defaced:

  • A northeast exterior wall of the Goderich-Huron YMCA located on Suncoast Drive East

  • The rear exterior wall of Sleep Matters located at a commercial plaza located on Suncoast Drive East

  • A small storage shed located at the Windsor Salt property located on Huron Road

The messages sprayed on the walls were primarily racial and homophobic slurs. A swastika symbol and an unflattering message for the police were also sprayed onto the walls. A combination of brown, black, and pink spray paint was used by the vandals.

Graffiti is any writing, symbol or drawing that is applied to any surface without the property owner’s consent. When a person applies graffiti, he/she is committing a criminal code offence called Mischief. Mischief can carry a jail sentence upon conviction.
